Six hours later he stalked into his mansion, so far beyond angry he felt as if his brain were made of plasma. “Get me Hannah,” he barked at his butler, Julie Wilson. He dropped his bag near the staircase and headed for his office. He needed a drink. Hell, he needed a whole bottle of something strong to dull the rage throbbing through his skull.

“Alex! What are you doing here? You’re not supposed to come home until next week,” she said, sounding surprised as she followed him. “Is Jesse with you?”

So, Jesse didn’t come back here, he thought, stopping to look at her. She was his butler, and his employee, but she was also the woman who’d raised him with his grandfather after his father had disappeared and his mother had died. He couldn’t just ignore her like the rest of his many employees. She stood there, mouth open in surprise. Julie never showed that kind of emotion. She was the most unflappable person he’d ever met. Alex stared at her, trying to figure out what to say, when he realized she was dressed… oddly. Instead of her usual uniform of black pants and white blouse, she had on neon pink sweats and a black t-shirt. She looked feminine. Her running shoes sported a line of glitter running across the tops. He didn’t even know she owned a pair of running shoes. Have I entered some sort of alternate universe? he wondered vaguely, but then he dismissed her clothing. It wasn’t important.

“I need Hannah. I need her to help me find Jesse,” he said, then clenched his teeth as he recalled, yet again, the stupid fucking note Jesse had left on the desk at the bed and breakfast.

“Of course,” Julie said mildly, correctly interpreting the signs of his impending brain explosion. She cocked her head. “May I ask what happened to your vacation?”

Alex pulled the crumpled note out of his pocket and thrust it at her. “Some whack-job tried to kill Jesse, and like a total idiot, my boyfriend thought it would be a good idea to go elsewhere, thus sparing me the danger of his presence.” He took a deep breath, held it, and then did it again. It didn’t help. He watched as Julie smoothed out the paper and read it.

“Someone tried to kill him?” she asked him after a moment.

Alex nodded shortly. “Apparently, this crazy bastard was in love with Jesse’s mother. When she died, he lost whatever tenuous grip on sanity he’d possessed, and spent the next several years plotting out ways to kill Jesse’s father for taking her from him. And then he succeeded.”

Julie’s brown eyes widened. “Oh, no.”

“Oh yes,” Alex bit out.

“The blizzard?”

Alex nodded. “Indeed.”

She pursed her lips tightly, then sighed. “Even so, that doesn’t explain why he’s trying to kill Jesse now.”

“You would think that he’d understand how crazy it is, wouldn’t you?” Alex ran his hands through his hair. “But no. This guy is nuts. He yelled something about Jesse being a faggot.
